About the Talk

Telecommunications systems have been long a part of imperial repertoires, whereby the economies and societies of dominated areas have been subordinated — to be sure with opposition and resistance — by powerful capitalist countries. In this presentation, Dan Schiller sketches this complex process in the history of the United States. From the post office to the internet, telecommunications systems have coiled through U.S. empire, even as imperialism itself has been successively reconfigured.

About the Speaker

The author of numerous books and articles, including a forthcoming history of U.S. telecommunications from the early post office to the internet, Dan Schiller is emeritus professor of communication and information sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
